Every phone in this series so far has been a budget phone that costs even less used. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is different. This was Samsung's $449.99 near-flagship of spring 2023, the phone reviewers kept calling most of a Galaxy S23 for half the price. Three years of depreciation later, it has become something better: most of a flagship for a seventh of flagship money.

Where it outclasses everything else in this series

Spec Samsung Galaxy A54 5G

RAM 4 GB

Battery 5000 mAh, 25W wired fast charging

Three things separate the A54 from the budget phones covered earlier in this series. The display: a 6.4 inch Super AMOLED at 120Hz and full 1080p, which still looks flagship-grade in 2026. The camera: the 50 MP main sensor has optical image stabilization plus a real 12 MP ultrawide, and it produces photos budget phones simply cannot. The build: Gorilla Glass front and back, IP67 sealing against dust and water, and an under-display fingerprint reader. The one comfort-feature casualty is the headphone jack; the A54 dropped it.

The comparison that settles it: Samsung's newer A35 5G

Samsung's 2024 mid-ranger, the Galaxy A35 5G, launched at $399.99. Here is the detail most buyers never notice: it runs the exact same Exynos 1380 processor as the A54.

CPU performance between these two phones is identical because the silicon is identical. The A35 gets you one extra year of updates and a slightly larger screen; the A54 answers with the sharper front camera and the stronger camera system overall. A year after the A35's launch, that is a remarkably thin case for spending roughly three times more than a refurbished A54 costs today.

The refurb vs new math

Samsung gave the A54 four generations of Android upgrades and five years of security updates from its spring 2023 launch. That schedule runs into 2028, which means a refurbished A54 bought today still has years of supported life ahead. A new phone near its current used price gets you a bottom-tier device with a dim screen and a shorter update runway. The same money spent on this three-year-old mid-ranger gets you a demonstrably better screen, camera, and build. When people ask us where the value peak of the used phone market is, phones like this are the answer. We wrote up the general case in our refurbished value guide. Every unit passes the 25-point TrueGrade inspection and carries a 90-day return window.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G get updates?

Samsung committed to four Android version upgrades and five years of security updates from its spring 2023 launch. Security coverage runs into 2028, unusually long for a used phone at this price.

Is the Galaxy A54 5G slower than Samsung's newer mid-range phones?

Not compared with the Galaxy A35 5G, which uses the exact same Exynos 1380 processor. CPU performance is identical between the two. Samsung's pricier A5x successors are faster, but they also cost several times what a refurbished A54 does.

Is the A54 5G water resistant?

Yes. It carries an IP67 rating, so it is sealed against dust and designed to survive brief submersion in water. Very few phones near its current used price offer that.
