How to Wipe Your Phone Before Selling It (iPhone & Android)
Selling your old phone is easy money — but only if you hand it over clean. A proper wipe does two jobs: it protects your personal data, and it releases the phone from your accounts so the buyer can actually use it. Skip the second part and you'll ship a phone that's bricked by Activation Lock or Factory Reset Protection, which means refund requests, bad reviews, or a very awkward conversation.
Here's the complete checklist, in the right order, for both iPhone and Android.
Step 1: Back Up Everything First
A factory reset is irreversible. Modern phones encrypt your data by default, and the reset destroys the encryption keys — there is no "undo" and no recovery service that can bring your photos back. Back up before you touch anything else.
iPhone:
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes.
- Or back up to a computer: connect the iPhone, open Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app/iTunes (Windows), and click Back Up Now. Check "Encrypt local backup" so your passwords and health data come along.
Android:
- Go to Settings > Google > Backup (on Samsung: also Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data for Samsung Cloud) and run a backup of apps, settings, and call history.
- Confirm your photos and videos are in Google Photos (open the app and check the backup status on your profile icon), or copy them to a computer over USB.
- Don't forget the easily-missed stuff: downloaded files, WhatsApp chats (it has its own backup setting), and any two-factor authenticator apps — move your 2FA accounts to your new phone before wiping, or you can lock yourself out of everything.
If you're upgrading, set up the new phone from this backup first and live with it for a few days. Wipe the old phone only after you're sure nothing's missing.
Step 2: Sign Out of iCloud — the Activation Lock Step (iPhone)
This is the single most important step when selling an iPhone. While Find My is enabled, the phone carries Activation Lock: even after a factory reset, it demands your Apple ID password before anyone can set it up. A buyer who receives an Activation-Locked iPhone has received a paperweight.
The good news: on iOS 15 and later, the erase flow handles this for you when done correctly:
- First, unpair your Apple Watch if you have one (open the Watch app, tap your watch, and unpair — this also clears the watch's own activation lock).
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- The assistant shows what will be removed and prompts for your Apple ID password. Entering it signs you out of iCloud, turns off Find My, and removes Activation Lock as part of the erase.
- If you prefer to do it manually, go to Settings > [your name], scroll down, tap Sign Out, and enter your password — then erase.
Already shipped the phone without doing this? You can still release it remotely: sign in at icloud.com/find, select the device, choose Erase, then Remove from Account. Removal from your account is what clears Activation Lock.
Step 3: Remove Your Google Account — the FRP Step (Android)
Android's equivalent of Activation Lock is Factory Reset Protection (FRP). If a phone is reset through recovery mode while a Google account is still on it, the setup screen will demand that account's credentials, locking the buyer out.
The key detail: a factory reset started from inside Settings, while you're signed in and unlock the phone yourself, clears FRP properly. You only hit FRP problems when a reset happens the "untrusted" way. Still, the belt-and-suspenders approach is to remove accounts first:
- Go to Settings > Passwords & accounts (Samsung: Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts), tap your Google account, and choose Remove account.
- Samsung phones: also remove your Samsung account (Settings > tap your name > Sign out) — Samsung has its own reactivation lock tied to Find My Mobile.
- Remove your screen lock (PIN/pattern) last, if you like, as a final confirmation that no protection layers remain.
Step 4: Handle Your eSIM and SIM Card
Your phone number is part of the handover, too:
- Physical SIM: just pop it out and keep it. Move it to your new phone or hold it until your carrier transfers service.
- eSIM: transfer your line to your new phone first — most carriers support eSIM transfer during the new phone's setup, or you can call them. Once your number is safely active elsewhere, erase the eSIM from the old phone. On iPhone, the erase flow asks whether to keep or delete eSIMs: when selling, choose delete. On Android, the factory reset screen has a checkbox to erase downloaded eSIMs — check it when selling.
Never erase an eSIM before the number is working on your new device, or you'll need your carrier to reprovision it.
Step 5: Run the Factory Reset
With backups done and accounts removed, the actual wipe is the easy part.
iPhone:
- Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Tap Continue, enter your passcode and Apple ID password when prompted, and confirm.
- The phone reboots once or twice and lands on the "Hello" setup screen. Done.
Samsung Galaxy:
- Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset (on the newest One UI versions: Settings > General management > Reset > Erase all data).
- Scroll through the summary of accounts and data, tap Reset, confirm with your PIN, then tap Delete all.
Google Pixel and most other Androids:
- Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
- Tap Erase all data, confirm your PIN, and confirm again.
Because the storage is encrypted and the reset destroys the keys, a settings-menu reset on any modern iPhone or Android renders your old data unrecoverable — no extra "data shredding" apps needed.
Step 6: Verify the Wipe Before You Ship
Two minutes of verification prevents 99% of post-sale problems:
- Boot the phone. It should land on the language/"Hello" setup screen with no requests for a previous Apple ID or Google account. If you can step through the first setup screens to the Wi-Fi page without an account prompt, the locks are clear.
- Check your account from another device. iPhone: open Find My (or icloud.com/find) and confirm the old phone is gone from your device list — if it lingers, use Remove from Account.
